In 1946 local community leaders had a dream about establishing professional baseball on the Kitsap Peninsula. The result was the Bremerton Bluejackets, the county’s first and only professional baseball team.
2004 brought another group of baseball entrepreneurs. Led by Rick Smith, the Kitsap BlueJackets became an inaugural member of the prestigious West Coast League (WCL) which is now comprised of 12 teams in three divisions. The BlueJackets are in the West along with the Bellingham Bells, Cowlitz Black Bears and Victoria HarborCats; the East features the Kelowna Falcons, Walla Walla Sweets, Wenatchee AppleSox and Yakima Valley Pippins; the South includes the Bend Elks, Corvallis Knights, Klamath Falls Gems and Medford Rogues.
Now, in 2015, a new partnership group hopes to breathe renewed life into the franchise and bring the community together around what may be Kitsap County’s most important sports team.
